If your furnace is not producing enough heat or not producing heat at all, there are a few things that you can check in order to get your furnace working again.

Check Your Thermostat

It may seem like a funny place to start, but the first thing that you should do is check your thermostat. Make sure that your thermostat is actually on and set it up so that it is at least five degrees higher than the temperature in the room. The thermostat needs to be set high enough above the room temperature in order to ensure that the thermostat will actually engage and turn on.

Next, check and make sure that your thermostat's batteries are working if it runs on batteries. Change them out and see if that fixes the issues. You may also want to make sure that you don't have your thermostat on a program. If it is, turn the programming off, and manually turn on your furnace via the thermostat.

Check the Circuit Breaker

Next, you are going to want to make sure that the circuit breaker for your furnace has not been tripped. If your circuit breaker for your furnace is not connected to any other outlet in your home, you may not know that the circuit breaker has been tripped.

Go to your home's breaker panel and find the circuit breaker that is connected to your furnace. Test the breaker by flipping it back and forth. Make sure that the circuit breaker is in the on position. This should reset your circuit breaker. Give your furnace a few minutes to turn on after you reset the circuit breaker.

Check the Filter

Finally, you are going to want to check the filter on your furnace. When the filter gets clogged up, it can actually prevent your furnace from working effectively and producing enough heat.

Make sure the furnace is off before you Take the filter out of your furnace, and then hold the filter up to the light. If lots of light shines through filter, it is clean. If hardly any light shines through the filter, you are going to need to either replace or clean the filter.

If your furnace is not turning on or producing enough heat, check the thermostat, check the breaker, and then see if the filter needs to be cleaned or replaced. If these checks do not work, you need to call your local furnace repair services company so that they can come out and figure out what is happening with your furnace. Remember, the best way to protect your furnace is by getting your furnace checked at least once a year.
